Inaugural High Performance Academy Deemed a Success

The first Oztag High Performance Academy (HPA) was held on Friday, the 15th of November to Sunday, the 17th of November at the Sydney Academy of Sport in Narrabeen.

The top 19 males and top 19 females in the country between the ages of 13-15 were identified and selected to take part in the HPA.

We started out with the presentation on the Friday afternoon, with special guests Australian Kangaroo, Reuben Garrick and Australian Jillaroo, Quincy Dodd on hand to present the players with their packs and speak to the group of what to expect at a HPA.

After the room allocations and dinner, Nathan Lai from the Sydney Roosters gave a presentation to the players on the importance of strength & conditioning and nutrition.

The day started at 7am with player testing which included the beep test, 40m sprints and 4 in 5s. After breakfast, there was a 2 hour field session to work on their skills and then it was off for a recovery session, with half the group heading into the ice baths and the other half with Nathan Lai taking them through stretching.

We had St.George Illawarra legend, Mark Gasnier and NRL & Super League Coach, Nathan Brown on hand for the field session to offer some coaching input and give tips where applicable.

After lunch, we were back on the field for another 2 hour session which included some games and then we were back into recovery for ice baths and stretching.

The players had worked hard and earnt themselves a well deserved nourishing dinner with some fun trivia and games afterwards, taken by Joel Holmes, to unwind before another big day ahead.

We were ready to go at 7am again for a pool session before heading to breakfast. At 10am, the final 2 hour field session took place.

A short break for lunch and then we were back out on the field for some intense round of matches with all players working on the skills that they had learnt and getting assessed by our expert coaching team throughout the game play.

We finished off with a short presentation before the players headed back to their homes for a well earnt rest.

The team at Australian Oztag would like to thank all the parents, players, staff and coaches for all your efforts! All players conducted themselves in a professional manner and should be very proud of themselves with all the hard work they put in.

The feedback for the HPA has been extremely positive and we are already looking forward to next year’s HPA!
