Introducing Hilltops Oztag – The new regional area starting up in Young
The Cherry Capital of Australia is set to hold Hilltops’ first ever Oztag competition, kicking off on Friday October 16 at Miller Henry Oval, Young.
This Spring, Hilltops Oztag will run an 8-week Friday night Mixed Opens competition, with one week of finals.
Association licensee, James Sheehan said the new competition is a great social opportunity for the community as it will cater for all abilities.
“Hilltops Oztag is a different experience for people around the region. It’s particularly great for those who are into their footy, but don’t want the contact,” James said.
“The best thing about it being social is that your team can consist of your friends, family or work colleagues,” he said.
James also noted the importance of playing Oztag during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“It’s not only an opportunity to meet a bunch of new people, but it gets the community out exercising in the fresh air,” he said.
James is confident that Hilltops Oztag will expand to the other major towns and provided they get enough support, will look at introducing a Men’s and Juniors competition next year.
“If we do get the response that we’re looking for from the community, we’ll be looking to grow the association from here in Young, to Boorowa and Harden,” he said.
Australian Oztag General Manager, Bill Harrigan and NSW Development Officer, Luke Manahan attended the Hilltops Oztag Information session and Referee course on Thursday September 10.
“There was a great turn out of individuals interested in playing,” Bill said.
“And about 10 referees attended, all enthusiastic to learn more about their role as an Oztag official,”
“It’s an exciting opportunity for the community, we look forward to watching it grow,” he said.
If you are aged 15 or older, gather some friends, family or work colleagues and submit a team for this upcoming Spring competition. Registrations close on Thursday October 8.
