Australian Oztag Team Up with Cancer Council

Australian Oztag Team Up with Cancer Council

Australian Oztag have always been a big supporter of raising money for fantastic charities and local communities.

Last year our charity partner was the Save our Sons Duchenne Foundation.

In 2019, we are proud to announce that we will be supporting the Cancer Council.

Every year in New South Wales alone, more than 48,000 new cases of cancer are expected to be diagnosed and the impact on families, carers and communities is significant.

The relationship evolved with South East Junior Oztag’s, Leah Bell selecting the Cancer Council as their charity of choice.

South East Oztag won the New South Wales Junior State Cup Club Championship and the $1,000 prize that goes with it. $500 for the club and $500 for the charity of their choice.

With the Cancer Council being Australia’s leading cancer charity, uniting the community, providing support and investing in research to save lives, Australian Oztag believe they are a great charity to support.

NSW Senior City v Country: Five players to watch

NSW Senior City v Country: Five players to watch

The 2019 NSW Senior City v Country tournament returns to the Central Coast on Saturday, with the Southern City Seahawks, Western City Scorpions, Northern Country Knights and Southern Country Pride all set to battle for bragging rights.

Oztag Australia has taken a look over the team lists for Saturday and picked out five players to keep an eye on at Tuggerah.

Isabella Slattery – Southern City Seahawks Mixed 20s

A perennial powerhouse in Australian representative teams over the past few years, Slattery is arguably the most dangerous female in the Mixed 20s division.

Slattery helped the East Coast Dolphins claim the 2018 Australian Championships title, then starred for Souths on their run to the grand final at the NSW State Cup earlier this year.

Keegan Woods – Western City Scorpions Men’s 20s

A star of the World Cup winning Australian Men’s 20s side, Woods is running out of room in his trophy cabinet after adding a Nationals and State Cup title to his resume in the past six months.

Woods will feature in a strong Western City Scorpions side and is one of the most electric players in the Men’s 20s division

Kadu Maques – Western City Scorpions Men’s Open

After a short stint playing mixed Oztag, Maques has returned to the Men’s Opens division and will play with the Scorpions on the Central Coast.

The former Australian rep, who led Penrith to the NSW State Cup semi finals, is a serious game changer and will cause rival defences plenty of headaches on Saturday.

Sian George – Northern Country Knights Women’s Open

One of the more experienced players in the Women’s Opens division on the Central Coast this weekend, George knows how to get things done at the business end of the tournament.

The Northern Country Knights gun claimed a State Cup title earlier this year and finished runners up at Nationals.

Kailey Gorman – Southern Country Pride Women’s 20s

Gorman has been one of ACT’s best at both the NSW State Cup and Nationals over a number of years and will get another chance to prove she can match it with the best this weekend, when she play in a Pride side featuring eight girls from the nation’s capital.

Newcastle Oztagger in with the Fight of his Life

Newcastle Oztagger in with the Fight of his Life

A popular member of the Newcastle Oztag family, Jerome Brecard recently found out that he’s literally got the fight of his life on his hands.

It was a Wednesday afternoon (a fortnight ago) and Jerome was due to referee in Newcastle. He wasn’t feeling too well and he called the convener to see if he could take the night off sick.

Jerome headed to the hospital for a check up and after a series of tests, the news he received shocked his wife and young family, Remy (3 years) and Maddox (9 months) to the core.

To everyone’s horror, Jerome was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer with the cancer having already spread to his liver.

Jerome started his chemotherapy this week and everyone at Australian Oztag would like to wish him all the very best in such an unexpected and tough set of circumstances!

The Brecard family are good friends of Oztag and have contributed to the sport’s development massively. Jerome’s father, Serge Brecard used to run Oztag in Murwillimbah.

Jerome travelled to London on a two-year working holiday visa in 2010, got involved in the local Oztag scene there and became one of the top referees in the country, refereeing numerous representative matches and at weeknight leagues in which he continued his refereeing when he settled back in Newcastle.

Jerome is now undergoing intense treatment and is unable to work and his wife can’t work due to being his full time carer. To alleviate the financial burden on this young family at this very difficult time, there are the following ways to support them:

Joanne and Brett Howard from Newcastle Oztag are organizing a fundraising evening at the Sunnyside Tavern in Broadmeadow on Friday, the 21st of June. For more information, keep an eye on the Newcastle Oztag Facebook page.

Newcastle Oztag will also be present at this weekend’s City Vs Country tournament at Tuggerah on the Central Coast with donation buckets. If you’re attending this weekend, please make a donation if you can.

If you won’t be attending the City Vs Country tournament and you’d still like to make a donation, you can do so by clicking here.
